It takes a great deal of work, patience and dedication to produce each of our felt ball rugs. All of our rugs are handmade by Nepalese women. They work in small shops and receive a fair wage for their work. For many of the women, especially those who have young children, flexibility in work is essential. For them it is also possible to work from home.
A picture is often worth a thousand words. Just take a look at how these beautiful felt ball rugs are masterfully created to get a feel for the luxury and artistry they provide. The Nepalese women gently roll the wet wool into a ball, around the soapy surface. Continue to roll and rinse as the ball begins to shrink and take shape. Once this is complete, they put the wool into cold water and rinse it. This intensive treatment is repeated several times until there are enough felted balls to make a beautiful felt ball rug.
Once the felt balls are sundried, they are ready for the next step: sewing them together! This takes a considerable amount of time, as the process of sewing the felt balls is a quite difficult and precise process. The amount of work it takes to make just one rug is truly incredible as each felt ball rug consists of at least 3,000 to 4,000 small felted balls! Truly a piece of art.
